In response to the exploration of exile in Maryam Khaleghi Yazdi’s work Living in Between (2019), Freddy García Rivero’s work ISSUED (2026) recontextualizes the trauma of migration through the lens of the recent Venezuelan diaspora. Utilizing the structure of a digital passport, the artist immerses us in the permanent limbo of the migrant’s life: the forced transition from one country to another in where full belonging remains unattainable.
Through four micro-artworks housed within the pages of this document, the piece serves as a powerful act of historical and aesthetic reappropriation. The titles of each micro-artwork reclaim the violent terminology of the colonial Latin American segregational system to classify the new hierarchies of modern migration. With a raw aesthetic drawing from Bolivarian propaganda, the low-resolution decay of Venezuelan public television, the spatial oppression of Soviet brutalism, and the references to urban exponents, the artist forces us to confront the ultimatum of the exile: adaptation.

He is a choreographer in Ritmo Latino, Teacher Assistant for Spanish 221, and a Tour Guide at UR. Freddy is interested in developing organizations that generate educational and employment opportunities for young people, contributing to their upward social mobility.
