In Calm Down! (2019-2020), Crystal Beiersdorfer contrasts digital guided meditations with the hyperactive nature of the internet. The piece combines guided meditation with collages of memes commonly found on social media. We’re asked to question the value of meditation apps within an ecosystem of stimulation and data collection, and some may find familiarity in the push/pull of our desire to relax and be connected simultaneously.
Crystal Beiersdorfer is a digital artist based in Chicago. Beiersdorfer’s work examines digital culture and how the digitized world promotes alterations to identity, body, and the psyche. Through a femme perspective, her art showcases how digital culture influences and controls concepts of the ideal femme figure and how pervasive technology has become in our daily lives. She is a recent graduate from the MFA and a current 2021 Visual Arts Fellow at the University of Chicago.
