Artist Dowon Yoo deconstructs the westernized point of view through digital production tools.

In Gesture (2020), Yoo partially obscures videos from the Sanggye Olympics; as the stadiums were being built, homeowners were evicted, and chaos ensued. His treatment of the media forces the viewer to think about what is removed from media we consume, and how editing can easily change a narrative.

In Right to Left (2022), Yoo reverses the left-to-right expectation of English readers by forcing the viewer to read backwards. When watching, it’s difficult not to ruminate on why the majority of the internet is published left-to-right, despite a significant number of global readers that read right to left.

Dowon Yoo explores and deconstructs Western-centric elements represented in digital space, with his primary work in the video space. Inspired by Traditional East Asian Painting and gestures, Yoo uses motion capture, 3D scanner, lens-based images, and the stabilizer effect, in order to create pieces escaping Western representations of the display of art. He is a media artist and designer taking an MFA in Digital+Media at the Rhode Island School of Design.
